Tide vs current, what is the difference?

Tide and current get used as if they were one word, but they name two different things. The tide is the vertical rise and fall of the water surface, the number a tide chart predicts. The current is the horizontal flow of water that the rise and fall sets in motion. Fish care about the current, boats fight the current, but almost every prediction you will ever read is about the height. Understanding the gap between the two is one of the most useful ideas in tidal water.

Height: the number on the chart

A tide prediction tells you how deep the water will be at a station, relative to a reference level called a datum. It answers questions like whether the ramp will be usable, whether the flat will be covered, and whether the sandbar will show. Current: the water in motion

As the tide rises, water has to flow in from somewhere, and that flow is the flood current. As it falls, the ebb current carries the water back out. Current speed roughly follows the rate of height change, so it usually peaks mid-tide and fades toward the turns. But current is shaped by geography in a way height is not: the same tide that produces a gentle drift along an open beach can run several knots through a narrow inlet, because the whole bay has to drain through one gap.

Slack water and the lag

The moment the current pauses between flood and ebb is called slack water. On open coasts, slack falls close to high and low tide. In constricted places, inlets, harbor mouths, and tidal rivers, the current can keep flowing well after the height has turned, sometimes by an hour or more, because the water level inside and outside the constriction takes time to equalize. Which one should you plan by?

It depends on the question. Launching, wading, beach access, and clamming are height questions, so plan by the chart. Fishing a rip, drifting a channel, or transiting an inlet are current questions, so plan by the flow, using a current station where one exists and local knowledge of the lag where one does not. The safest habit is to treat the printed high and low as approximate markers for the turn and watch the water itself.

Common questions

Is high tide the same as when the current stops?

Not necessarily. In open coastal water they line up closely, but in inlets, bays, and rivers the current can keep flooding for an hour or more after the height peaks. The pause in the current is called slack water.

What is the difference between flood and ebb?

Flood is the current that flows in as the tide rises, ebb is the current that flows out as it falls. Flood and ebb describe horizontal motion, while rising and falling describe the height.

Why does my tide app not show current speed?

Height and current are measured at different stations, and current stations are far rarer. Most apps, Slackwater included, predict heights and mark the turning points, which is where the current is weakest at most locations.
